What to Expect: My Live Wedding Painting Process

One of the questions I get asked most often is, "How does a live wedding painting actually work?" If you've never seen one in person, it's hard to imagine how a blank canvas transforms into a painting throughout your wedding day.

The truth is, the process begins long before I arrive at your venue. Here is a behind the scenes look at what goes into creating a live wedding painting!

The Night Before

The evening before your wedding, I spend time preparing everything so I can arrive ready to paint.

The first thing I do is tone my canvas with a layer of burnt sienna acrylic paint. This warm underpainting helps eliminate the intimidating blank white canvas and creates a beautiful foundation for the painting. It also adds warmth that subtly shines through the finished piece, giving it a richer, more timeless feel.

Next comes packing! I carefully check that I have everything I need—from paints, brushes, and easel to palettes, lighting, varnish, and all the little supplies that make the day run smoothly. I like to be over prepared, so I double check everything before calling it a night.

Arriving at Your Venue

On your wedding day, I typically arrive 2–3 hours before your ceremony. This gives me plenty of time to unload my supplies, introduce myself to your planner or venue coordinator, and find my designated painting location. I want everything set up well before guests begin arriving so I can work without disrupting the flow of your day.

Once I'm settled in, I begin painting the ceremony backdrop, whether that's your altar, beautiful floral arrangements, or the surrounding scenery. Starting with the background early allows me to capture the venue while it's still quiet and untouched.

During the Ceremony

About 30 minutes before the ceremony begins, I move my easel to the back of the aisle.

From there, I continue refining the painting while guests arrive. This is one of my favorite parts of the day because people are naturally curious! Guests often stop by to watch the painting come to life, ask questions, and chat while they wait for the ceremony to begin. I love getting to share the creative process with everyone.

Once the ceremony starts, my attention turns to capturing the special moment we've planned for your painting. For many couples, this is the first kiss at the altar, but if we've discussed another meaningful moment beforehand, I'll focus on that instead.

I take plenty of reference photos during the ceremony so I can accurately paint every detail throughout the evening.

Cocktail Hour & Reception

After the ceremony, I move my setup to the reception space while guests enjoy cocktail hour. This is when the painting really starts to transform. I begin adding you into the scene, building layers, refining details, and bringing the composition to life. Throughout the evening, guests are welcome to stop by, watch the progress, and chat with me. It's always fun to see everyone's reactions as the painting develops throughout the night.

As your reception continues, I'll keep adding details, adjusting colors, and refining the artwork while you enjoy celebrating with your family and friends.

The Final Reveal

Every wedding is a little different, and so is every painting.

If time allows, I'll apply a protective varnish so the painting is complete and ready for you to take home at the end of the evening. There's nothing quite like seeing a couple's reaction when they get to bring home a painting of their wedding before the celebration is even over.

Occasionally, a painting needs a little extra studio time to perfect the finer details. In those cases, I'll show you the painting before I leave so you can see how it turned out, then I'll take it back to my studio to complete the finishing touches.

Once it's finished, I'll carefully package and either personally deliver it (when possible) or ship it directly to you. Most paintings are completed and returned within 2–6 weeks after your wedding.
